Win-Win Situation with Automated Checkout

Efficient Control.

To meet all these needs, Wincor Nixdorf offers a range of hardware systems and, together with the TP Application Suite (Glossary, the necessary software to integrate the systems in existing IT platforms. With the TP Application Suite, we are able to control various types of checkout systems (Glossary, whether they are traditional checkout terminals, mobile solutions, self-checkout (Glossary systems, pay towers or scanning stations. This capability enables a highly efficient analysis of all transactions and uniform processes, and ensures that employees can control all processes intuitively. Moreover, all automated checkout systems can also be combined with cash components from Wincor Nixdorf. With these components, we can optimize the cash handling processes of our customers and control the entire circulation of cash within their operations through managed cash services (see “Cash Cycle Management” (Glossary in the chapter Cash Cycle Management).

Express Checkout at IKEA. IKEA, the world’s largest home furnishings retailer, has begun one of the largest international deployments of self-checkout technology. The rollout (Glossary covers 14 of the 24 countries in which the Swedish company operates.

The express self-checkout (ECO) solution, jointly developed by IKEA and Wincor Nixdorf, is designed to help customers check out quickly and free up staff to provide greater support. In stores in the designated markets, the home furnishings company is replacing half of all traditional staffed checkout stations with two new ECO systems and installing the new machines in groups of four. As a result, a greater number of checkout points will be available to customers on the same floor space as previously.

Increasing Security and Customer Satisfaction. Wincor Nixdorf has customized the self-checkout systems to provide numerous functions requested by the customer. For instance, payment is only possible with a credit card or an IKEA customer card, reducing the amount of cash in circulation and thus enhancing security. In addition, the touch screen user interface guides customers through the checkout process in easy-to-follow steps.

By using a unified software solution (Glossary, IKEA is able to manage both the new express checkout systems and the other traditional checkout lanes on a common platform. This enables a highly flexible installation of systems, creates a huge cost benefit for IKEA through system integration and simplifies processes for staff.
