Wincor Nixdorf wins cashEDI certification from Deutsche Bundesbank

Wincor Nixdorf is one of Deutsche Bundesbank’s first certified partners in what is known as the CashEDI (Cash Electronic Data Interchange) project. With this system, the Bundesbank offers its partners electronic support for their cash deposit and collection processes, thereby contributing to their optimization. Wincor Nixdorf can already assume responsibility for cash replenishment and pick-up service at cash points as features of its services portfolio for banking and retail customers, and from now on, it will also be relying on CashEDI. This means that information on cash collection from the Bundesbank and returns to the Bundesbank will be exchanged electronically in real time, providing enhanced transparency and security throughout the cash cycle.

Electronic communication with the central bank takes place over the CashEDI interface, which is now integrated in the order processing function for Wincor Nixdorf’s cash replenishment and pick-up service. This enables orders for cash replenishment and deposit pick-up at cash points to be routed automatically to a cash-in-transit (CiT) company and, via the CashEDI interface, to the Bundesbank.
Bundesbank branches assign a barcode and timestamp to each cash-in or cash-out transaction, and provide their partners with information on the current status of their cash. In the case of deposits, they issue an electronic receipt for each transaction. Additionally, in the not too distant future, cash counting results will also be communicated via electronic channels. To cover its cash needs, Wincor Nixdorf sends consolidated cash orders for all its cash points to the Bundesbank. At the same time, for each case CiT operators receive individual details on the cash point and the issuing Bundesbank branch. Wincor Nixdorf is then notified as soon as the Bundesbank branch has prepared the cash for collection. Finally, cash payout is confirmed electronically, enabling Wincor Nixdorf to identify such problems as delays or cash discrepancies immediately and to escalate them accordingly.

Another way in which Wincor Nixdorf uses CashEDI is as a source of data for comprehensive reporting. For instance, the analyses provided help speed up the difference reconciliation process. This results in less time spent on internal administration work and on cash handling activities overall.
The linkup to Deutsche Bundesbank's CashEDI system closes the final gap in an end-to-end solution that reaches from the terminal device all the way to banknote acceptance and payout. This puts Wincor Nixdorf in a position to provide greater transparency for its customers, minimize the risks involved and vastly reduce cash handling costs. From the viewpoint of cash-in-transit companies, the system means faster cash delivery and collection processes and, most importantly, improved transparency in view of the high cash losses suffered in Germany’s cash and valuables transportation industry today.
