SAF Superstore

Optimizing the supply chain is one of the big challenges for retailers because it entails huge potential for savings.

It is advisable to start engineering the process where it normally starts in retailing: at stores. This is where the right quantity of merchandise has to be available for customers at all times on the one hand, while trying to avoid excessive inventories on the other hand.

Store planning systems support users in meeting these requirements by helping to avoid stock-out situations while reducing inventories.

In SAF SuperStore, Wincor Nixdorf offers an automatic store planning system that is ideally tailored to the requirements of chain stores and delivers excellent results.

Solution

SAF SuperStore was developed by SAF in Tägerwilen, Switzerland, in conjunction with Prof. Gerhard Arminger from Bergisch University in Wuppertal. It operates in two key process steps: the forecast process and the planning process.

Sales are forecast for any number of stores and products with the aid of complex statistical forecasting methods. The optimum inventory is calculated on the basis of this. The software allows for the dynamics of market conditions by means of self-learning procedures. Forecasts are affected not only by historical data but also by external factors such as calendar effects, prices etc.

On this basis, the planning process then automatically calculates order quantities, allowing for suppliers' individual delivery times and for ordering cycles. Of course, optimization takes capital tie-up, logistic costs and delivery restrictions into account.

SAF SuperStore operates fully automatically. An integrated warning system indicates various situations that the system identifies as implausible. This is the case, for example, when inventories fall below zero or if a fast-selling product is not sold for a certain time. Any manual intervention that may be needed will only relate to such cases.

SAF SuperStore delivers excellent results with regard to reduction and optimization of:

  • Gaps in market presence
  • Inventories
  • Personnel for planning activities

The potential for savings can be identified by means of a potential analysis before the SAF SuperStore rollout project starts. This simulation provides key figures on reducing inventories and increasing market presence which enable future users to make sound decisions on the deployment of SAF SuperStore.
