Green IT - POS System
Technological progress – whether that means more powerful processors, graphical user interfaces, or new peripherals such as flat panel touchscreens and selfservice cash components – enables sophisticated POS applications that meet the wish for greater customer service. We see our challenge as being the fulfillment of the desire for better performance in an environmentally compatible fashion while keeping users' operating costs low. Energy efficiency, availability and effective service concepts have the greatest influence on achieving this goal. In the process, intelligent selection of the right components is critical.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION IS FOR US A TASK, A STIMULUS, A BELIEF AND A DUTY ALL IN ONE.
Energy-efficient processor technology
Energy-saving processor technology from the market leader Intel is used in all BEETLE POS systems. The Xseries models, which use a mobile, ultra-low-voltage Celeron M processor with a maximum consumption of only 5 watts, are particularly energy-efficient. They offer more than adequate performance for many POS solutions, coupled with excellent environmental compatibility. For more complex, multifunctional applications, the powerful BEETLE /M-II plus with the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processor technology delivers the very highest processor performance, yet consumes more than 30% less power than processors from the predecessor generation.
80 PLUS-compliant power supplies
BEETLE POS systems are equipped with 80 PLUS power supplies as a further important measure for increasing energy efficiency. They boast an 80% efficiency rate, up to one-third better than that of conventional power supplies.
Flash memory technology
As an alternative to the hard disk, Wincor Nixdorf is increasingly using storage media based on flash memory. The power consumption (less than one watt) of these solid state disks is significantly lower than current hard disk drives.
Power supply from the system
The peripherals are powered from the system. That eliminates the need for separate power supplies and the associated energy losses.
Longer service life
An important aspect: despite shorter innovation cycles, Wincor Nixdorf ensures a longer service life of up to 12 years and protects users' investments with migration
concepts and upgrade options.
Intelligent power management
The POS systems are not normally disconnected from the main power supply. BEETLEPOSsystems can be switched into various power-saving modes to enable power consumption to be controlled in line with demand.
Environmental standards are more than just an obligation
Avoidance of harmful substances also applies as a basic principle for the internal workings of the devices. Lead and nickel-cadmium batteries, for example, have been replaced by modern nickel-metal hybrid batteries. The packaging is made from environmentally-friendly materials. Polystyrene and synthetic materials are not used in so far
as is possible. Wincor Nixdorf therefore complies with the relevantRoHSandWEEEstandards. Protecting the environment is an integral part of company policy for Wincor Nixdorf. Several years ago, the company therefore introduced an environmental management system that has been regularly audited in accordance with the DIN EN ISO 14001 standard by the German Management System Certification Society (DQS).
All of these measures contribute to optimizing the energy balance of the POS systems, sparing resources and cutting operating costs for users.
